In 1926 Carmelo Gatt Baldacchino set up a small transportation company in Malta and today 90 years later, the company has flourished and expanded into other exciting sectors.

90 years of innovation 1926 - 2016
Diversification coupled with commitment to excellence, quality of service, mutual trust and economic foresight have been the guiding principles since the Group was first founded by the Gatt Baldacchino family, over 90 years ago.
- 1920 – 1949
1926 Carmelo Gatt Baldacchino founds United Motor Company, a bus and chauffeur-driven transportation operation.
- 1950 – 1969
1950 Carmelo’s son Charles joins the business and focuses on servicing the NATO mission in Malta.
1960 Charles Gatt Baldacchino takes over the business and embarks on a diversification and growth programme in tourism.
1961 United Garage Limited is set up and acquires the prestigious Hertz Rent-a-Car franchise for the Maltese Islands, making it the first franchise in Europe.
- 1970 – 1989
1970 The company expands into destination management and establishes itself as a leader in the sector, representing companies such as Exchange Travel and Thomson Holidays.
1975 United consolidates all group operations at prestigious premises in Gżira.
1982 The group ventures into the importation of motor vehicles and acquires dealership of Adam Opel.
- 1990 – 2009
1992 The group acquires the SAAB franchise and inaugurates new motor vehicle showroom in Ta’ Xbiex. Develops G.B. Buildings Business Centre.
1997 After the demise of Charles, a new Board of Directors is appointed, chaired by Charles’s widow, Carmen Gatt Baldacchino. Simon and Edmund take the role of Executive Directors.
2000 The group restructures its financing and sets up United Finance plc. In September the company issues its first bond and is listed on the Malta Stock Exchange.
2004 The group sets out to purchase and develop various building sites.
2005 The group expands into the retail business with the inauguration of the Oasis fashion store in Sliema.
2005 A consortium of investors led by the United Group sets up Penderville Limited and acquires a prominent site in St Julian’s to develop Pendergardens.
- 2010 – present
2010 The group opens the first Debenhams store at The Point Shopping Mall and later inaugurates a second store at Main Street Shopping Centre.
2011 United Group merges its vehicle dealership business with Easysell Kia Group. Cars International is launched, retailing Opel and Kia vehicles.
2015 The group is appointed M·A·C cosmetics affiliate partner and inaugurates its first stores.
2016 Motors Inc. is set up in partnership retailing Opel, Kia, Hyundai, Iveco. Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Jeep motor vehicles
2016 The United Group today is a major player in the automotive, retail and real estate sectors with a strong foundation for future growth.
